A picnic on the beach in Bali takes on a whole new meaning when you've got your own butler to do the work. The word "butler" comes from the French term "botellier" - a trusted servant responsible for the care and serving of wine since the days of Ancient Rome.

Aussie brides choose Bali to wed over any other destination. Ian Lloyd Neubauer reveals the island's most popular venues to say I do. Bali is the No.1 destination for Australians marrying overseas.
And for an added bonus, you're already at one of the world's great honeymoon destinations. The most daunting thing about getting married in Bali is the incredible diversity of venues to choose from. From glassencased villas with 360-degree ocean views, to botanical gardens edged by rainforest, to ancient Hindu temples that look like movie sets, Bali is a wedding planner's dream.

Space has one of the best addresses in town, on Jalan Drupadi (Drupadi Street), between Jalan Dhyana Pura and Jalan Laksmana, yet you'll never hear the roar of traffic or feel the crush of humanity. Set on a long, manicured gang (alleyway), Space's 11 chic villas comprise six two-bed and five new one-bed villas aimed at couples, yet they're still airy and large, with a good-size pool, cabana and open-air bathrooms. Villas can be interconnected, ideal for extended families.

THERE'S nothing our driver Gede can't find or fix in Bali, whether it be tracking down a reputable fish doctor or packing and wrapping ungainly shopping items for the midnight flight home.

I’m staying at Space at Bali villas, hidden away off the main drag in Seminyak. In fact it’s a little like a hidden palace. We walk through aged double wooden doors into a secret garden with perfectly manicured lawns that are spongy underfoot surrounding an edgeless pool. The garden is lined with palms and frangipanis and leads to a two-bedroom open plan villa.

HOLIDAY villas in Bali are proliferating like toadstools after rain. They are to be found down sleeve-slim alleys barely broad enough for a car, shoulder-to-shoulder in ranks beside and behind the beach strips, overlooking paddy fields and rivers, on the outskirts of the hill town of Ubud and tucked into villages around Tanah Lot on the west coast and along the cliffs of Uluwatu on the island's southwest tip.

The latest trend in accommodation in Bali, one of Australia’s long time favourite destinations, is the villa. A private villa, usually with private pool and five-star service, provides a truly luxurious holiday solution for couples, friends and families alike. And it’s surprisingly affordable.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi may disagree as may New York or Hong Kong.
But for sheer aesthetics, I don't think you can beat Bali.
And with more and more hotels now including private villas complete with pools - and your own butler - the Indonesian island's luxury reputation is heading sky-high.
The latest is AYANA Resort and Spa, which used to be the Ritz-Carlton Bali, Resort and Spa in Jimbaran. It's been given a multi-million dollar makeover, now employs 1000 staff with butlers certified by the Guild of Professional Butlers and has become particularly well known for its new Rock Bar - a must-visit for anybody in the know..

All the cool places seem to begin with the letter, S, these days in Seminyak and surrounds. There's Sardine, Sarong and Sip - restaurant/bars in the area, which also includes nearby Kerobokan (known more widely for Schapelle's not-so-salubrious accommodation) and Legian. The old staples - which were tres chic when they opened - such as Ku De Ta and La Lucciola are still popular. But they're getting nudged out by even more stylish bars and restaurants such as Metis and fun ones like the Red Carpet Champagne Bar.

It’s easy to see the appeal; Space at Bali is a well-named concept, with six 600sq m two-bedroom villas in a garden compound wedged off Jalan Drupadi, one of the arteries that feeds into Seminyak’s popular Jalan Laksmana (better known as Jalan Oberoi) and to the lively shopping parades of Jalan Raya Seminyak and Jalan Legian.

The swankiest area on Bali's west coast, Seminyak is dotted with luxury villas, upscale bars and restaurants. Although it may not boast the big international superstars of Nusa Dua, a lot of the hotels here offer a bit more character and a good deal more privacy.

No pressure at the pool villas in this Baliness hideaway - families and lovers get garden romance and seclusion and seclusion in a famously chic beach area
"Originally, we built the villas to give friends a place to chill out in Bali," begins Laurent Kuenzle, explaining the story behind "Space" - a "rustic-chic" resort the Swiss expat and his partners at Asian Trail have put together on the island.
